Wrinkles Aren’t Just Wrinkles

Dr. David Stoker

If you have been considering a wrinkle-reducing injectable treatment in Los Angeles such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, you may have heard that BOTOX is often used to treat “dynamic” wrinkles. What does this term mean? Well, there are many types of wrinkles, and each should be approached differently with regard to proper treatment. Three of the most common types of wrinkles are dynamic, static, and wrinkle folds.

Dynamic Wrinkles

Definition: Dynamic wrinkles are those caused by repeated facial movements, such as smiling, squinting, or frowning. These often appear during muscle contraction as creases on the forehead, “crow’s feet” around the eyes, or laugh lines at the outer corners of the mouth.

Best treatments: BOTOX or Dysport®

Static Wrinkles

Definition: Static wrinkles are present without facial movement and usually occur as a result of diminished skin elasticity. These lines often appear in a criss-cross pattern on the cheeks and around the eyes.

Best treatments: fat transfer, eyelid surgery, or mini facelift

Wrinkle Folds

Definition: Skin folds are normally due to weakening of the underlying facial structures and can cause deep lines between the nose and mouth, which are often referred to as facial “parentheses.”

Best treatment: traditional facelift, mini facelift, or short scar facelift
