Smartlipo™ laser liposuction in Los Angeles is a laser-assisted system used to liquefy unwanted fat. Once the fat is liquefied, it is suctioned away with a traditional suction system. The concept is that the laser will minimize bruising during the procedure and possibly tighten the skin as well.
There are now many manufacturers marketing laser liposuction systems. Smartlipo is the name of the systems from Cynosure, one of the originators and leaders in this field. However, as is the case with all fat removal systems, the surgeon's experience and skill are the most important determinants of a patient's results.
For more than a decade, I've performed clinical research on leading edge liposuction technologies. This has included tumescent, ultrasound, power-assisted, water-assisted, and laser-assisted systems. Because of my role as a leader in the field of body contouring surgery, I dedicate a substantial amount of time to investigating promising new technologies for my specialty. The Smartlipo system is one of the newer systems I've tested, and the technology has been shown to work effectively and produce dramatic results.
Smartlipo uses one or two laser energy wavelengths to melt fat and cauterize blood vessels. The energy is delivered through a tiny 2 mm fiber that is inserted through the skin. The surgeon controls the level of laser energy, the length of treatment and the areas to be treated. The fatty tissues are melted and then suctioned away to facilitate healing and avoid problems.
The benefits of Smartlipo that the manufacturer claims include:
There is some early clinical evidence to substantiate the manufacturer's claim that the skin is tightened following the procedure. I have used the Smartlipo system for some time now and I find it's somewhat helpful to me in treating fibrous tissues. Power-assisted liposuction or a similar system is still necessary to remove substantial amounts of fat and achieve optimal results.
Candidates for Smartlipo are also candidates for other liposuction techniques. When fat is removed, the skin's elasticity should cause it to tighten. The laser may supplement this skin tightening. If patients need substantial skin tightening, it's usually advisable to supplement the Smartlipo with another procedure, such as a tummy tuck or facelift, which is more effective at smoothing skin.
Liposuction has one of the lowest complication rates of any cosmetic surgery operation and Smartlipo has a very low complication rate, especially when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. The most common problem may be lumpiness or skin wrinkles and it is also possible for the laser energy to cause skin damage. Risks such as infection, bleeding or seroma are very uncommon.
Recovery from Smartlipo is rapid, just as it is with traditional liposuction. One or 2 days away from work are enough for most patients.
