Ultrasonic liposuction was introduced more than a decade ago, and newer techniques such as power-assisted liposuction (PAL) are often utilized today. However, for some patients, liposuction using high-energy sound waves can still be the right approach. Having performed thousands of liposuction procedures during my career, I can help you understand your choices and make the right recommendation for your unique needs.

Dr. Stoker Explains Ultrasonic Liposuction
The ultrasonic liposuction technique can be a good approach for my patients who have areas of the body where fibrous tissue and fat are interspersed, such as the chest or the flanks. I also use it for areas that were scarred from previous rounds of liposuction. Sound waves are introduced to rupture the fat cells, and the liquefied material is suctioned away with PAL or a similar aspiration technique during a second step.
Educated at some of the most elite institutions in the country, Dr. David Stoker uses his highly advanced knowledge to ensure that each patient achieves beautiful, harmonious results — whether it's through a simple non-surgical procedure or a more advanced surgical transformation. A small wand or cannula is introduced under the skin during ultrasonic liposuction. It emits high-energy sound waves that cause fat cells to vibrate, burst, and release liquefied fat. Surgeons then use gentle suction with an aspiration technique such as PAL to remove the fat.
Candidates
Candidates for liposuction can range from young people in their late teens to people well into their 70s. However, special attention must be paid to skin laxity in older patients. Most liposuction procedures will result in some tightening of the skin, but as patients age, some areas of the body become less ideal targets due to the natural loss of skin elasticity.
You may be a good candidate for ultrasonic liposuction if you have areas containing both fibrous tissue and fat—whether due to heredity or a previous procedure. I’ve performed ultrasonic liposuction on chests, love handles, backs, buttocks, hips, thighs, and areas of the abdomen.
Recovery
Recovery is usually fairly easy for my liposuction patients. Most ultrasonic liposuction patients need more than a week of recovery time. Bruising and swelling will take about two weeks to resolve. Positive results are immediately noticeable, and final results will be visible over the next few months.
Risks
Ultrasonic liposuction poses relatively few risks. Bleeding, infection, or small burns can occur, though these are rare in my practice. It’s also possible to experience contour irregularities—these can most often be improved in a second procedure.
There are so many liposuction techniques and alternatives available today—if you feel confused about which approach is right for you, you’re not alone. It takes a knowledgeable professional with experience in a variety of approaches to tailor a liposuction procedure to your needs.
