In Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and throughout Southern California, breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. There are many reasons why women seek breast enlargement. Some feel that increasing their breast size will give them greater self-confidence. Others would like to feel more proportional between their top and bottom so they fit better into their clothing. Mothers frequently seek breast augmentation to restore what was lost with breastfeeding and aging. Supporting loose skin and giving upper breast fullness are also common reasons for choosing breast augmentation at my Marina del Rey practice.

What Can I Expect at My First Breast Augmentation Consultation?
In my approach to breast augmentation, communicating with my patient is key. I carefully review their medical histories and breast evaluation questionnaire before the initial consultation. I ask patients what their goals are for breast augmentation. Common reasons include:
A modest increase in size to fit better in their clothing.
A significant increase in volume to change their look.
An improved breast shape.
Better symmetry between their breasts.
To restore their pre-pregnancy figure.
Many choose to combine their augmentation with a breast lift or other procedures.
After I gain an understanding of what the patient wants, I then proceed to the examination. I consider many features including:
Breast volume, width, and height
Rib cage curvature
Skin tone and laxity
Breasts are highly variable, and I help the patient understand what their best options are based on their physical characteristics. We then come to a common agreement about what our goal will be.
When the patient returns for their pre-operative visit, typically 2 weeks before surgery, I have them look through many photographs of breasts to show me their desired result. Many are interested in the “L.A. Natural” look describe in this blog post. If there is a discrepancy between what we have discussed and what the patient is showing me with pictures, I’ll identify the difference and sort out what she really wants. At the end of our meeting, I’m confident that I understand what the patient desires. Likewise, the patient feels comfortable with our communication and our plan.
What Happens During Surgery?
When we proceed with the operation 2 weeks later, I bring the photographs with me to the operating room. When the patient is asleep, I create the pockets for the implants on each of the breasts, and I use implant sizers to confirm the volume and shape of the optimal breast implants for the patient. Having operated on thousands of breasts, I estimate very well what size will look best on a patient. Even so, I still prefer to try out breast implants before I make the final decision on size and shape. It takes me longer to do the procedure when I use this thorough system, but I sleep well at night knowing that I’ve done the best I can for each patient.
How Long Is Recovery After Breast Augmentation?
Most patients are back to work and most of their usual routine in several days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks. My breast augmentation patients tell me how thrilled they are with their results and often share with me that they have discovered new confidence – in their clothes and out of them.
