Why Breast Implant Profiles Matter as Much as Size

Women researching breast augmentation online come across countless questions about how to choose the size of breast implants. That’s because implant size is one of the important decisions patients make when planning their procedure.

Rarely found, however, are inquiries about choosing implant profiles, although the profile of breast implants is equally important in getting the breast augmentation results you want. In this blog post, we will cover why breast implant profiles matter as much as size.

What Does Implant Profile Mean?

Implant size is measured in cubic centimeters, such as 300 cc. This is a standard unit of measurement, unlike cup sizes that can vary from one brand to the other. Implant profiles refer to how far the implants project from the chest surface, as seen from the side.

The choice of breast implants involves the relationship between these 3 important variables:

  • Implant proportions
  • Implant volume
  • Patient anatomy

Why Is Implant Profile Important?

Understanding how these key factors above relate to each other is essential when choosing breast implants that will provide the results you want. This is why choosing implants is more complicated than simply selecting a size and why it’s essential to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who can help you navigate the decision-making process.

2 important variables to consider for breast augmentation

Implant profiles (or proportions) range from low to high profile with several options between those 2, depending on the implant manufacturer. Low profile means the implant has a wider base but projects less from the chest. High-profile implants, on the other hand, have a narrower base with more projection. Other options include moderate profile, moderate plus profile, and extra-high profile.

Women with a narrow breast base may be more inclined to high profile implants, while those with a broader base may look better with low profile implants. If a woman falls in between, she may opt for a moderate or moderate plus profile to satisfy her projection and volume needs.

Which Implant Profile Is Right for You?

When I consult with women interested in enhancing the size of their breasts, many of them ask about how they can get the L.A. Natural results they see in our breast augmentation before-and-after photos. We achieve those results by customizing the approach for every patient by carefully evaluating the patient’s anatomy and recommending implants based on their body’s frame and their goals.

Most women considering breast augmentation have a realistic idea about what they want their physique to look like in the end, including the size and shape of their breasts. The breast implant profile plays a key role in determining the final look.

Taking numerous measurements provides the information needed to zero in on the implant profile and size that is best for a patient’s anatomy. Of course, not all patients have the same goals—and some patients may need a breast lift with their implants to get their desired look. Having an honest discussion about expectations is an essential element when it comes to a patient’s satisfaction with the results.

Different Implant Profiles

Like many things in life, moderation is good. That’s why we most often use moderate profile implants for patients who want the L.A. Natural look. But, to use another cliché, variety is the spice of life, and not all patients are good candidates for moderate profile implants.

Other scenarios include:

Do you want a dramatic change?

Women who want more of a “wow” factor often choose high-profile breast implants. These implants have a smaller base and create more projection than moderate profile implants, which is desirable for women with slimmer chest frames. One key benefit that most women report is the side wall of the implant adds more height and reduces the risk of visible rippling on breast tissue.

Do you want a more subtle change?

As you might imagine, low-profile implants create subtle results that patients often want. A low-profile implant is also a good option for patients with wider chest frames.

Do you want a full, round, natural breast shape?

With a slightly wider base than high profile implants, moderate profile implants project less from the body and provide women with the rounder shape they want while still increasing the breasts’ size and fullness. These options are also popular with patients who have narrow chests.

What about moderate plus implants? This style offers a middle ground between moderate and high profile implants. Patients who want natural-looking results benefit from these implants, especially those who have lost breast volume due to natural aging.
