BOTOX® & Other Neurotoxins

At our Los Angeles practice, we offer BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, XEOMIN®, and Jeuveau—all FDA-approved neurotoxins that are designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by the repeated movement of facial muscles. Over time, as you laugh, smile, and frown, contractions of these muscles create lines and wrinkles on the face known as dynamic wrinkles. With carefully placed injections, we use neurotoxins to block nerve impulses to the muscles that are causing dynamic wrinkles. This relaxes the muscles and allows the skin to lay smooth.

What's the difference between BOTOX and other neurotoxins?

While all are slightly different, neurotoxins offer similar results. Key differentiators include:

  • BOTOX Cosmetic is the original neurotoxin, approved for cosmetic use by the U.S. FDA in 2002. Produced by Allergan, the company that makes JUVÉDERM®, KYBELLA®, and LATISSE®, BOTOX was originally approved by FDA for medical uses. Today, BOTOX injection is by far the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the country.
  • Dysport, produced by Galderma, tends to disperse farther from the injection site making it a good choice for larger areas. Results also tend to develop sooner than with BOTOX.
  • XEOMIN, produced by Merz Aesthetics, is sometimes called "naked BOTOX" because it does not contain preservatives. One benefit XEOMIN has over its competitors is the fact that it only contains one ingredient (no additives) making it less likely to cause a severe reaction.
  • Jeuveau, produced by Evolus, is the first neurotoxin developed exclusively for cosmetic use. It is the most recent neurotoxin to be FDA-approved and is also called #newtox. Results from clinical studies showed that Jeuveau may take effect faster than other neurotoxins and may last longer for certain patients.

During your consultation, your provider will put together a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your cosmetic goals. We may recommend combining a neurotoxin treatment with other skin care treatments such as injectable fillers, chemical peels, or laser skin resurfacing. Together, we'll chart a course for your ultimate enhancement. This may mean that we suggest a surgical procedure such as a facelift or eyelid surgery if it is better suited to your cosmetic goals.

What are the benefits of BOTOX and other neurotoxins?

These treatments smooth away a variety of concerns that are caused by the contractions of facial muscles, including:

  • Frown lines (11s) between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes
  • Lip lines
  • Chin dimpling
  • Drooping mouth corners (DAO muscles)

What else is BOTOX used for?

BOTOX and other neurotoxins have a range of other uses, which include:

  • Brow lift
  • Gummy smile correction
  • Masseter reduction (reshape lower jaw)
  • Smoothing neck bands (platysma muscles)
  • Reducing excessive sweating on the palms or underarms

How should you prepare for BOTOX treatment?

Before your appointment, discontinue blood-thinning medications (including NSAIDs) and alcohol for 7 days. If you are prone to bruising, you may take arnica a few days leading up to your appointment.

What are BOTOX treatments like?

During your appointment, your provider will use a tiny needle to inject the medication into your facial muscles. We offer a variety of techniques such as ice to minimize patient discomfort, if desired. Most neurotoxin appointments last approximately 30 minutes.

What are recommended dos and don'ts after a BOTOX or neurotoxin treatment?

For about 3 to 4 hours following your treatment, you are advised to:

  • Avoid NSAIDs and alcohol to help minimize bruising
  • Stay upright
  • Apply ice over the treated area, if needed

How soon will you see BOTOX results?

Neurotoxins take approximately 2 to 10 days to reach full effect, depending upon the type of product injected. We recommend scheduling a 2-week follow-up appointment to see if any touch-ups are recommended.

How long do BOTOX/neurotoxin treatment results last?

Results last 3 to 5 months, depending on the:

  • Product
  • Area treated
  • Individual

Treatments with fewer units than the more common, recommended dosages typically do not last as long.

Who should not have BOTOX?

Neurotoxin injections are not intended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those on antibiotic therapy, or those who have a known reaction to neurotoxins or any of their ingredients.
