Power-assisted liposuction is my favorite technique for removing fat. Because of my leadership position as an instructor for plastic surgeons, I test most new systems for fat removal as soon as they become available. For the past decade, I’ve found that using PAL (power-assisted liposuction), allows me to achieve the best results and fastest recovery for my Los Angeles liposuction patients. Here, I will elaborate on why the power-assisted liposuction system is special in my hands.
He’s written 2 textbook chapters on liposuction, sharing his knowledge with future plastic surgeons.
He regularly teaches liposuction courses at meetings of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS).
He was named as a top surgeon in liposuction by The New York Times.
He’s pioneered some of today’s most popular liposuction techniques, such as power-assisted liposuction (PAL).

This 27-year-old woman already had a nice figure, but she was bothered by small fatty bulges that were obvious in certain clothing. Losing weight didn't make sense for this patient because she was comfortable at her current weight and felt that if she lost more weight through diet that her face and neck would look too lean. Instead, she began looking... Read More
This 23-year-old woman from Europe wanted to refine her figure, but since she is a model, she was worried that her face and neck would appear undesirably too thin if she were to lose more weight through diet and exercise. She came to Dr. Stoker's practice to find a Los Angeles plastic surgeon who could help her achieve the look she wanted without... Read More
When I was a resident in plastic surgery in the late 1990’s, I was already interested in pioneering new fields in body contouring surgery. I began extensive clinical studies with one of my mentors, Dr. Gerald Pitman, because of his leading edge techniques and large number of patients. We first studied ultrasonic liposuction and compared it to the traditional suction techniques. We then went on to conduct clinical studies on the first few generations of power-assisted liposuction equipment. We were both impressed with the new technology because it was much more effective, but also more gentle. It was just the combination we were seeking to get the best results for our patients.
Suction-Assisted Liposuction
Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL) was the first liposuction method used to remove unwanted fat, and it was introduced in the 1980’s. It’s a simple system that involves a hollow metal tube (cannula) with holes on the end. Mechanical force generated by the surgeon loosens fat cells and allows them to be suctioned away in the connected tubing through a vacuum system. SAL was a huge step forward in plastic surgery because it allowed surgeons to remove large amounts of fat with minimal scars.
SAL does, however, have limitations. SAL is not very effective in fibrous areas, such as the chest, flanks and back. It’s also not nearly as useful in repeat liposuction cases, where internal scarring may inhibit the removal of significant amounts of fat with smooth results. SAL does not give surgeons as much control in sculpting as they have with some other systems, such as power-assisted liposuction.

Power-assisted liposuction was introduced in the late 1990’s as a safer and more efficient technique for removing fat. The power-assisted system relies on a vibrating cannula tip that gently shakes fat loose and suctions it away in one step. The cannula vibrates at just the right frequency to maximize the efficient removal of fat. The vibration also helps the cannula to glide through the fatty layers with a minimal amount of force. Power-assisted liposuction gives me more control and precision, allowing me to focus on sculpting a more beautiful figure for the patient. It also helps to minimize a patient’s recovery because there’s less trauma to the body.

When you describe the concept of fat transfer procedures to patients, their faces tend to light up. “You can take fat from an area where I don’t want it and then put it where it will make me look better?” Fat transfer can offer the best of both worlds for the right patients. Even though… Read On
As a body contouring specialist, I’ve performed many skin reduction procedures such as arm lift surgery at my Los Angeles practice for patients who have lost significant weight. Upper arm skin often sags after weight loss, and it can be quite frustrating for men and women who have dedicated themselves to losing weight. Not all… Read On
Since the use of tumescent solution revolutionized modern liposuction in the 1980s, technology has been steadily advancing and producing new ways to make the body contouring procedure less invasive and more effective. Patients considering liposuction at my Los Angeles practice may be surprised to learn how many varied approaches to the procedure exist today. Each… Read On
