What are dermal fillers?

These injectable treatments provide a variety of benefits such as reducing signs of aging and enhancing facial features. Frequent reasons women and men visit us for filler treatments include:

  • Smoothing out lines, folds, and wrinkles
  • Filling out thin lips and defining flattened lips
  • Replacing or adding volume to the cheeks, temples, chin, and under the eyes
  • Softening shallow scars such as those from acne and chickenpox
  • Rejuvenating the backs of the hands
  • Sculpting the nose (non-surgical nose job)

How do fillers work?

Fillers are injectable treatments that are placed under the skin in areas of volume loss such as wrinkles, folds, and hollows. Many contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which occurs naturally in the skin and diminishes with age and sun exposure. Other fillers contain substances that stimulate the production of collagen.

What is the difference between BOTOX® and fillers?

BOTOX Cosmetic treats dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet around the eyes, which are caused by the contractions of facial muscles. Over time, repeated muscle contractions and dynamic wrinkles may become static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are present whether or not a person is animating. By starting BOTOX as a young adult, it is possible to delay or prevent the development of static wrinkles. We call this “prejuvenation.”

Fillers may be used to add or restore volume in a variety of areas including wrinkles, sunken cheeks, and thin lips. We often perform BOTOX and filler treatments together because they address different concerns and provide a more complete facial rejuvenation.

RHA Collection of Fillers

RHA Collection logo

Created by TEOXANE Laboratories, RHA (for resilient hyaluronic acid) fillers integrate seamlessly with facial features for results that look natural both while the face is moving and at rest. The hyaluronic acid (HA) in these fillers more closely resembles the skin’s natural HA than other HA fillers. Each product in this collection of fillers has a unique density and other properties for use in specific areas of the face.

  • RHA® 2 is the first HA filler FDA-approved for treating dynamic wrinkles. This exciting alternative to neurotoxins like BOTOX smooths away moderate lines and creases on the upper face, such as frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead creases, and crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes. Unlike neurotoxins, results are instant.
  • RHA® 3 corrects deeper facial lines and creases, smile lines (nasolabial folds), and vertical lip lines.
  • RHA® 4 is the firmest option, making it well suited for adding and restoring volume to the cheeks and contouring the jawline.

RHA filler results last up to 15 months depending on which filler is used and where it is injected.

JUVÉDERM Family of Fillers

These fillers contain hyaluronic acid and are formulated for specific areas of the face. JUVÉDERM fillers are made by Allergan, the same company that makes BOTOX Cosmetic. These injectable fillers contain lidocaine for minimal discomfort during injection. Options include:

  • JUVÉDERM® Ultra restores or adds volume to the lips. It can also correct smile lines (nasolabial folds) and marionette lines around the mouth and chin.
  • JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus is a bit firmer than Ultra for deeper nasolabial folds and marionette lines. In some cases, it may be used as a lip filler.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC adds subtle volume and symmetry to the lips. It also smooths vertical lip lines.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® XC softens facial wrinkles, smile lines, and marionette lines while allowing natural expressions. Results may last up to 18 months.

Restylane Family of Fillers

This family of HA fillers is made by Galderma, the company that makes Dysport®. Each Restylane product is formulated for specific uses and all work beautifully with one another for comprehensive results. Restylane products include lidocaine to minimize discomfort during injection.

  • Restylane-L® corrects nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It is often our filler of choice for tear troughs and is also used to plump up the lips. Results can last up to a year.
  • Restylane® Silk is formulated specifically for sculpting the lips and smoothing out lip lines. Results last up to 9 months.
  • Restylane® Lyft (formerly called Perlane) adds volume to the cheeks and elevates deeper nasolabial folds. It is also useful for enhancing and defining the chin and mandibular angle. Restylane Lyft may also be used for a non-surgical nose job. Results last up to 18 months.
  • Restylane® Refyne moves naturally with expressions making it excellent for correcting fine lines and depressions on the face. It is also effective for softening mild to moderate signs of aging around the mouth such as smile lines and marionette lines. Results last up to 1 year.
  • Restylane® Defyne is a firmer version of Refyne that corrects deeper facial wrinkles and folds. It is also useful for enhancing upper and lower lips. Results last up to a year.

Sculptra® Aesthetic

Sculptra is a unique filler (formulated with poly-L-lactic acid) that encourages collagen production within the deep dermis. Results develop gradually with multiple treatments, but last for 2 years or more. We use Sculptra to add or restore volume to the:

  • Cheeks
  • Temples
  • Smile lines
  • Marionette lines

We also use Sculptra to reduce cellulite in the buttocks region by placing precise, superficial injections into the buttocks. We can also use Sculptra for non-surgical buttocks augmentation, also called “non-surgical butt augmentation,” by injecting larger volumes into the deeper planes of buttocks subcutaneous tissue.

RADIESSE®

RADIESSE also works to stimulate collagen production. It contains calcium-based microspheres that form a framework within the skin to lift and contour tissues and support new collagen. We use this filler to restore volume to the cheeks, temples, and around the eyes; contour the jawline; and rejuvenate the backs of the hands. Results begin to show immediately and last about 18 to 24 months.

What are dermal filler treatments like?

Treatment with injectable fillers is generally quick and comfortable; all fillers contain lidocaine for enhanced comfort. For patients who have a rare allergy to lidocaine, we can use fillers without lidocaine pre-mixed. We use the following 2 different techniques when injecting dermal fillers:

  • Cannulas are blunt tipped needles that allow for product placement through one pilot point.
  • Needles have a sharp tip that allows for product placement with each injection.

Each of these techniques has advantages and disadvantages, depending on anatomic areas being treated and patient needs. Our team uses a combination of these two techniques to achieve the most beautiful, natural-looking results. Patients can return to work the same day as their filler treatment.

How long after fillers do you see results?

In general, dermal filler treatments provide immediate results so you’ll leave our office with your enhanced new look; although, there may be mild redness and swelling at the injection sites. Some fillers like Sculptra produce results that improve over time as collagen is gradually replaced in the skin.

To enhance and provide maximum comfort during all our aesthetic treatments, we offer topical and local anesthetics. We also offer PRO-NOX Nitrous Oxide (NO) for an additional cost. PRO-NOX is an anesthetic system that delivers 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide to help relieve pain and anxiety during treatments.
