Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Stoker has partnered with UCLA's stem cell research center and is offering his Los Angeles liposuction patients the opportunity to donate their unwanted fat to medical research.
Marina Del Rey, California (October 2011) – Dr. David Stoker is offering Los Angeles liposuction patients the opportunity to be a part of a ground-breaking research opportunity through the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Women and men who have liposuction can choose to donate their excess fat to UCLA's stem cell research center, and help scientists develop a range of treatments for conditions such as diabetes and cancer.
"This is an excellent opportunity for women and men to reuse their fat to benefit medical research," notes Dr. Stoker. "Typically, when patients have liposuction, excess fat is disposed of as medical waste. Now, scientists from UCLA can use this fat to advance their stem cell research. After a patient has surgery, our services will anonymously donate the excess fat. Patients can benefit with the knowledge that they can both enhance their physical appearance and potentially help others lead healthy and active lives."
Dr. Stoker, who is a board-certified plastic surgeon and specialist for breast augmentation in Los Angeles, provides advanced techniques to help people with a wide range of cosmetic needs. Over 80% of fat cells Dr. Stoker removes during liposuction remain viable for 96 hours in the lab, making this a highly effective technique for helping scientists at UCLA.
"I am happy to see many of my patients joining me in assisting researchers with this innovative project at UCLA," says Dr. Stoker. "We have already seen a number of women and men donate their excess fat to stem cell research, and we are happy to promote the development of new treatments for a range of conditions."
Dr. Stoker specializes in a variety of options for liposuction in Los Angeles, including PAL (power-assisted liposuction) and Smartlipo™ laser liposuction. In addition to achieving sculpted bodies through liposuction, some patients decide to take advantage of Dr. Stoker's techniques to transfer the harvested fat to other areas of the body that may have lost volume over time. This fat grafting technique often is used for creating ideal curves of the buttocks, otherwise known as the Brazilian buttocks lift. Fat grafting may also be used to restore the youthful fullness of the face.
"Advances in procedural techniques mean better results for patients and minimized recovery time," notes Dr. Stoker. "Whether patients choose fat grafting or decide to donate the harvested fat for research, I am pleased to offer options where we can help patients make the most of their surgery."
