A tummy tuck and a body lift both improve body contour, but they differ in scope. A tummy tuck focuses on the abdomen, while a body lift addresses excess skin and tissue across multiple areas, often including the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks. The right choice depends on the extent of skin laxity and the areas you want to refine.
What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) focuses on removing excess skin, tightening abdominal muscles, and creating a smoother, flatter midsection.
Most of my tummy tuck patients:
- Have loose or stretched abdominal skin after pregnancy
- Have experienced moderate weight loss
- Notice abdominal bulging due to muscle separation (diastasis recti)
- Want a more defined, toned appearance in the midsection
In many cases, I perform a more advanced version called an Hourglass Tummy Tuck, which enhances the waistline while restoring abdominal structure.
A tummy tuck is not the right approach if you have lost significant weight and have excess skin in several areas of the body, such as the buttocks, thighs, upper body, or arms.
What Is a Body Lift?
A body lift is a more comprehensive procedure that addresses loose skin and tissue around larger areas of the body. It’s most commonly performed after significant weight loss, such as after bariatric surgery or major lifestyle changes.
In these patients, skin often loses elasticity and does not “snap back,” resulting in excess folds around multiple areas. I perform both lower and upper body lifts, in addition to skin removal surgeries for other areas.
Depending on the patient’s needs, surgery may include:
- Upper body lift to address excess skin on the back, chest, and upper torso
- Bra line back lift to remove excess upper back skin
- Axillary (underarm) lift for excess tissue near the armpits
- Inner thigh lift for sagging in the inner legs
- Pubic lift to improve contour in the lower abdomen and mons area
- Arm lift (brachioplasty) to remove excess upper arm skin
These procedures are often combined or staged, depending on the amount of excess skin and what can be done safely.
Who Is an Upper Body Lift For?
An upper body lift is designed for patients who have experienced significant weight loss and are left with excess skin in the upper torso that doesn’t improve with diet or exercise. This may include loose skin along the upper back, bra line, chest, and underarm area, which can affect both appearance and comfort.
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have noticeable skin laxity in the upper back or bra line
- Experience loose or hanging skin near the underarms
- Have lost a substantial amount of weight and are now at a stable weight
- Feel self-conscious in fitted clothing, bras, or sleeveless shirts
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle but want a more refined, contoured upper body
Upper body lift procedures are often customized and may include a bra line back lift or arm lift, depending on your specific concerns. The goal is to create smoother, tighter contours that align with the rest of your body, especially after major weight loss, when multiple areas may require attention.
For patients who don’t fit neatly into either category, more specialized approaches may offer better results.
The Bikini Body Lift™: An Entirely New Procedure
Over time, I found that traditional lower body lifts didn’t always deliver the kind of refined, natural-looking results my patients were looking for, especially those who were fit and healthy, and had not experienced massive weight loss.
That led me to develop the Bikini Body Lift™, a revolutionary lower body contouring technique that:
- Lifts, smooths, and rounds the buttocks without implants, fat, or filler
- Dramatically improves the appearance of cellulite on the thighs and buttocks
- Tightens loose skin in the thighs, abdomen, and pubic region
- Effectively addresses skin laxity due to menopause, pregnancy, and weight loss
- Keeps scars hidden, even in a bikini
What Makes the Bikini Body Lift™ Different?
In my practice, this technique has largely replaced the traditional lower body lift because it delivers more refined outcomes for the right patient.
Key differences include:
- A posterior-focused lift, improving the buttocks and lower back
- Circumferential contouring without the bulkiness sometimes seen in traditional lifts
- A higher, more defined waistline
- No reliance on fat transfer or implants
- A scar concealed within a bikini line
It’s a highly specialized procedure, and not everyone is a candidate. For the right patient, however, it can provide a level of contour and smoothness that other procedures simply can’t achieve.

Choosing between a tummy tuck and an upper body lift—or a more advanced option like the Bikini Body Lift—comes down to a few key factors, including whether your concerns are focused primarily on the abdomen or extend to other parts of the body.
In my consultations, I focus on aligning the procedure with your anatomy and goals, not forcing a one-size-fits-all solution.
