Cosmetic Surgery Trends for 2020

Woman excited to learn the top cosmetic surgery trends of 2020

Rapid technological advancements in aesthetics coupled with the spread of social media have led to an era of what seems like never-ending cosmetic trends. At our plastic surgery practice in Los Angeles, we often see patients who are interested in looks that have captured the public’s imagination.

That’s fine, but we also counsel patients to have realistic expectations. A few years back when Kim Kardashian jump-started the buttock augmentation craze, I consulted with a number of women considering Brazilian butt lift surgery. I made sure they understood that enhancing their curves wouldn’t result in them looking like Kim.

A few months into 2020, we’re seeing new trends emerge and some carryover from last year. In this blog post, I’ll provide a brief rundown on what procedures are popular and what they involve.

Trends We’re Seeing

The following list isn’t a complete account of procedures that are gaining popularity, but it reflects what plastic surgeons are seeing throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Daddy Do-Over

The “dad bod” had its moment, and, naturally, the Daddy Do-Over is the result. A twist on the Mommy Makeover, the Daddy Do-Over is a combination of procedures to help men regain their youthful appearances. Men of all ages are seeking cosmetic enhancements to become more confident, especially on social media. They also are looking at body contouring procedures such as liposuction for their abs and flanks. You can see results in our gallery of before-and-after photos featuring men who had liposuction at our Los Angeles practice.

Return of the Facelift

Even as injectable treatments such as fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic remain very popular, women and men are realizing that these procedures can’t match the results produced by facial plastic surgery. At a certain point, a facelift, eyelid surgery, or neck lift is needed to turn back the clock. With advanced surgical techniques, these procedures create a more youthful and natural appearance.

Baby BOTOX

No, this isn’t about injecting infants with BOTOX. Baby BOTOX is the nickname for targeted micro-injections of neurotoxins, such as BOTOX, to create results that look more natural and subtle than standard doses. The desire for cosmetic treatments that produce a more natural look goes beyond BOTOX, such as women asking for smaller breast implants.

Jawline Enhancement

A well-defined jawline is considered attractive for both men and women, and more patients want that look these days. Social media again plays a role here, as Instagram and other selfie-heavy platforms accentuate the positive (and negative) aspects of our appearances. Fillers such as Radiesse®, which is made with a synthetic calcium complex that feels a lot more like bone than your typical hyaluronic acid injectable, can create the enhanced jawline you want.

Breast Revision

There are several reasons for the increase in women seeking breast implant revision surgery. Patients who got breast implants shortly after silicone gel re-entered the market in 2006 may want to remove or replace the aging devices. Some women wish to upgrade from saline to silicone gel implants, while other patients may want to downsize. Whatever the reason, breast revision surgery is popular.
