At my practice in Marina del Rey, I approach every patient as an individual. That includes tailoring treatment plans based on the unique anatomy of various ethnicities, including Asian patients. During my career, I’ve worked with women and men from across the global Asian community, including individuals from Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Thailand, and throughout the United States.
It was clear from the outset that consistent anatomical features of Asian patients, particularly in facial structure, skin thickness and behavior, and healing patterns, along with their aesthetic preferences, required a unique approach that emphasizes precision and subtle enhancement.
My Approach to Plastic Surgery for Asian Patients
Every patient I see brings a unique combination of anatomy, aesthetic preferences, lifestyle considerations, and cultural perspective. When working with patients of Asian heritage, I take an especially individualized and nuanced approach that prioritizes refinement over transformation and preserving identity.
This approach requires expertise and experience that few plastic surgeons possess. Across facial procedures, breast enhancement surgery, and body contouring, I emphasize precision, restraint, and natural-looking outcomes. In many cases, subtle changes create the most elegant and impactful results.
Facial Plastic Surgery
My goal when performing facial procedures is to enhance balance and proportion without compromising a patient’s ethnic features, understanding that facial structure, skin quality, tissue characteristics, healing patterns, and aesthetic ideals differ from patient to patient.
My intent is never to erase or westernize features, especially for patients considering Asian eyelid surgery. Instead, I focus on enhancing balance, proportion, and definition while preserving the characteristics that make each patient look naturally like themselves. That requires a deep understanding of facial structure, skin quality, tissue characteristics, healing patterns, and aesthetic ideals.
When performing my Traceless Deep Plane Facelift and Neck Lift™, I manipulate structures well below the skin’s surface, elevating and repositioning muscle and tissue rather than pulling the skin. This minimizes tension and supports more natural healing and less visible scarring.
Restraint is the guiding principle; I focus on subtle refinement rather than reshaping the face.
This woman underwent a Traceless Deep Plane Facelift in addition to chin augmentation, an upper lip lift, and upper and lower eyelid surgery. Laser skin resurfacing contributed to a smoother, more radiant complexion.
Breast Surgery
Many of the Asian women I see considering procedures such as breast augmentation have narrow chests, tighter skin, and less native breast tissue. These are critical factors when choosing the size of breast implants. Implants that are too large or project too much will look unnatural.
I explain to patients that choosing implants that will achieve natural-looking results depends on:
- Chest width
- Tissue characteristics
- Overall body proportions
I also want to ensure minimal implant visibility and long-term stability of their results. I’m also very intentional with incision placement and closure, and I manage the healing process closely to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
Body Contouring
Asian patients seeking body contouring procedures, such as liposuction or lower body lifts, often have smaller frames, which means subtle changes can create a significant visual impact.
For liposuction procedures, I focus on shaping and refinement rather than aggressive fat removal. I create smooth, continuous transitions when treating multiple areas and avoid contour irregularities. I’m particularly conscientious about being conservative in areas where aggressive treatment can look unnatural, such as the flanks, inner thighs, calves, and ankles.
For patients with skin laxity or changes after weight loss, I often recommend the Bikini Body Lift™.
This procedure allows me to:
- Reposition tissue to improve overall contour.
- Define the waistline more clearly.
- Enhance shape in a way that looks natural and proportional.
One of the key considerations here is scar placement. I design incisions so they sit low and can be concealed within the bikini line. This is especially important in patients where pigmentation changes are a concern.
This 35-year-old Asian woman pursued the Bikini Body Lift™ after significant weight loss led to pronounced skin laxity and wrinkling across her lower back and buttocks.
Skin Healing and Scar Management
How the skin heals is another consideration when performing plastic surgery on patients of Asian heritage. Their skin tends to be more prone to:
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Darkening scars
- More visible or thicker scars if closures are under tension
That’s why scar management begins before surgery with incision planning. I place incisions as discreetly as possible, often within natural folds or areas that can be easily concealed. I also focus on minimizing tension. When the incision closure has too much tension, scars tend to widen, darken, or become more noticeable. I also use layered closure techniques to support deeper tissue so the skin bears less tension.
Post-Operative Monitoring
Closely monitoring incisions during the early phase of healing is just as important as the planning I do before surgery. I provide detailed guidance to patients about protection from sun exposure, a critical aspect of preventing changes in pigmentation, and intervene early if I see evidence that scars may become more prominent.
Non-Surgical Treatments
I have the same conservative philosophy for laser skin resurfacing and injectable treatments that I bring to cosmetic surgery. With lasers and energy-based treatments, I adjust settings carefully based on skin type and focus on gradual improvement rather than trying to do too much at once.
Using BOTOX® or fillers conservatively preserves natural facial movements, which is especially important for patients I see who have public-facing professions or who are in the entertainment industry.
Working With International Patients
Many of my Asian patients travel to our Los Angeles-area practice from around the world, including Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, and Thailand. We’ve developed a convenient and efficient program for women and men who fly into Southern California for aesthetic surgery.
This includes:
- Clear pre-operative planning.
- Thoughtful scheduling to minimize downtime.
- Close follow-up and communication.
Our team partners with trusted recovery facilities and private-duty nurses to ensure comfort, safety, and peace of mind. We can also help arrange rides to and from surgery and post-op visits.
Understanding Your Lifestyle and Expectations
Many of the patients I see from the Asian community are highly accomplished in their respective fields, including some who are public figures. They are lawyers, doctors, financial managers, designers, and entertainers who value discretion, minimal downtime, and subtle results that won’t attract attention in either professional or social settings.
A Final Thought
By being thoughtful in planning, measured in my execution, and focused on results that hold up over time, I do what makes sense for each individual within the context of their lifestyle.
