How does microneedling work?

The SkinPen device has a disposable cartridge of very short, fine needles that create tiny “micro injuries” in the surface of the skin to initiate its natural repair and regeneration processes. Also called collagen induction therapy, microneedling increases blood flow, generation of new dermal tissues, and production of collagen and elastin. The depth of treatment can be adjusted to the thickness of the skin and desired depth of treatment.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

We use microneedling to help women and men rejuvenate exposed skin such as on the face, neck, décolletage, and backs of the hands. Benefits, include:

  • Smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Firming and smoothing thinning, crepey skin.
  • Reducing the appearance of pores by firming the surrounding skin.
  • Clearing away brown spots and melasma by breaking up melanin in the skin so that it is absorbed by the body’s natural cleansing processes.
  • Softening the appearance of superficial scars such as acne scars by breaking down scar tissue and causing new tissue to grow (remodeling).
  • Improving the absorption of skincare products through tiny channels in the skin.

The SkinPen allows for a wide range of needle penetration (0.25 to 2.5 mm) giving it the versatility to a variety of skin conditions and areas of the body. Many dermarollers have just 1 to 2 depths (0.25 to 0.5 mm).

What are microneedling treatments like?

Microneedling treatments are performed right in our office using topical numbing cream for enhanced comfort. The SkinPen device a disposable cartridge of needles that vibrate as it is run across the skin’s surface (feeling similar to the vibration of an electrical toothbrush). Treatments typically take an hour to perform.

What can I expect after a microneedling treatment?

After a microneedling treatment, expect your skin to look severely sunburned and feel tight and dry. We will give you a topical serum to apply to your skin as needed. It’s important to keep it clean and dry and postpone workouts for the first 24 hours to give the micro-channels time to close at the surface of the skin.

When will I see results from microneedling?

Patients often notice immediate improvement in the texture and brightness of their skin; however, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for lasting changes like new collagen to develop.

How many microneedling treatments do you need?

For optimal results, we recommend 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. After that, you can have a maintenance treatment every 3 to 6 months.
