Conveniently located to serve Los Angeles, Marina del Rey, and Santa Monica, California.
A body lift in Los Angeles is designed to tighten the skin of a patient all the way around their body. The improvements may be dramatic. Patients who benefit from this surgery have typically lost a large amount of weight and have significant deformity from skin laxity. The body lift may address the lower body or the upper torso.

Body lifts following massive weight loss, either through diet and exercise, GLP-1 medications, or a combination, are an area of specialization for me. I perform hundreds of major operations on weight loss patients to tighten loose skin and improve body contour. I’ve published extensively in journal articles and textbook chapters on combined surgical procedures, body contouring and body lifts. In courses that I teach for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery, I include instruction on techniques and safety for these procedures.
Techniques
Body lifts can be performed in two different ways, to treat either the upper or the lower body:
Lower Body Lift
The lower body lift is the most common type of body lift in my practice. It typically includes a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), thigh lift, and buttocks lift performed at the same time. The incision is concealed around the waistline so that it’s not visible when wearing underwear or a bikini.

Upper Body Lift
For patients with severe skin laxity of the upper torso, an upper body lift may be the appropriate treatment. This typically includes a bra line back lift and upper abdominoplasty. The procedure is individualized for the particular patient.

Candidates for body lifts typically have lost large amounts of weight. They should be healthy and well nourished without vitamin or mineral deficiencies. They should not smoke, as smoking increases the risk of complications.
Recovery
Patients usually take at least one week off from work following a body lift, and I encourage them to ambulate shortly after surgery. They may resume full exercise approximately six weeks following surgery.
Risks
Possible risks of a body lift include delayed wound healing, bleeding, infection, seroma, and venous blood clots. I take many precautions to minimize the risk of each of these complications. With diligent care, each of these complications may be treated and still result in a happy outcome from body lift surgery.
If you maintain your weight and do not become pregnant, your results will last indefinitely. The aging process may cause skin laxity at some point, which can be addressed with surgery or nonsurgical treatments.
Does insurance cover body lifts?
Medical coverage for body lift surgery varies between insurance providers and policies. These procedures are typically considered cosmetic and not covered. However, if the surgery is deemed medically necessary, for example, because of recurring skin problems, the procedure may be partially covered.
How much weight do I need to lose before a body lift?
There is not a set amount of weight loss needed for a body lift. You should be at or near your goal weight for at least 6 months, have a BMI around 30, and have enough lax skin to necessitate the surgery.
What will my scars look like after body lift surgery?
A lower body lift leaves a scar that extends all the way around the abdomen. If possible, Dr. Stoker places it where it will be covered by underwear and swimsuits. This scar can encompass those for a panniculectomy, pubic lift, tummy tuck, and buttocks lift. It typically becomes thin and fades within a year, and most patients consider it an acceptable trade off for the improved contours and comfort they gain from the surgery.
