Facelift surgery lifts the skin—and often the system of muscles and fat under the surface—into a more youthful position. I make small incisions around the ears to allow me to elevate the tissues and secure them in place. Some of my Los Angeles face lift patients benefit from an additional small incision under the chin that enables me to tighten the neck as well.
Face lift surgery is one of my specialties, and natural-looking results are a top priority. To achieve this goal I start with a detailed examination, carefully evaluating each patient's unique characteristics. Then I develop an appropriate surgical plan. Often, surgery requires tightening underlying facial structures so the skin can be re-draped with minimal tension.
There are dozens of technical steps that will determine whether a result appears natural or artificial. For instance, some surgeons might rely mainly on tightening the skin without addressing the underlying muscles and fat. This technique can create too much tension on surface skin and result in an unnatural, "pulled" look. I go to great lengths to obtain natural appearing results.
Look for a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in cosmetic surgery and beautiful before and after pictures.
Most patients take about a week off work. Any residual bruising or swelling subsides over the next few weeks.
I use 3 basic facelift techniques, refining them to match the specific needs of each patient. A mini facelift, appropriate for younger patients, addresses laxity in the cheeks and tightens the jowls to some extent. A short scar facelift elevates skin and underlying facial structures through minimal incisions around the ears. It also improves the neck. For patients in their 50's and older, the full incision technique yields maximum benefits for cheeks, jowls and neck.
General anesthesia is used most often during facelift surgery.
I perform the majority of my face lift procedures in our outpatient surgical center just across the street from my office in Marina Del Rey.
Most candidates for a face lift in Los Angeles are in their 40's to 60's. Younger patients will be starting to notice cheek laxity. Older women and men and weight loss patients will often be bothered by sagging cheeks, jowls and neck.
Make sure you're generally in good health before surgery. Your blood pressure should be under control, and if you smoke you should stop prior to your operation.
Fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic can be very effective for small, localized areas of the face, including vertical wrinkles on the forehead and small lines above the mouth. But for most people experiencing the general laxity that comes with age, sun, gravity and weight loss, a facelift is still the gold standard for rejuvenation. A personal consultation is best for learning your options.
Facelift surgery risks can include infection, bleeding, nerve damage and delayed healing. In my experience, few patients develop complications from a facelift.
